An Ability is a special trait possessed by a Pokémon that has a (usually beneficial) effect in battle. Each Pokémon can possess one Ability at a time; the Ability it possesses is normally determined by its species. While every species of Pokémon has at least one Ability listed, many species can have one of two. These Pokémon have an equal chance of knowing either Ability. Which of the two it knows is determined by the Pokémon's Personality Value, and thus cannot be switched.

Occasionally, a Pokémon's evolution will have different Abilities than its current stage. If the evolution has one Ability, then the Pokémon's Ability becomes that after evolution. If the Pokémon has one Ability and the evolution has two, then the Pokémon has an equal chance of knowing either Ability (as determined by its Personality Value) after evolution. If both the Pokémon and the evolution have two abilities, then it will know the evolution's first Ability if it knows its first Ability, and the evolution's second Ability if it knows its second.

While each Pokémon can only know one or two Abilities naturally, certain skilled trainers are capable of teaching a Pokémon an alternate Ability. These Abilities are retained even after the Pokémon evolves, and can be passed down by breeding.

List of abilitiesEdit

Each Ability listed here is linked to an article containing a list of Pokémon that can have that Ability. For those lists:

  • Pokémon listed under 'Single Ability' can only have that Ability naturally.
  • Pokémon listed under 'Dual Ability' can naturally have that Ability or another, based on the Pokémon's Personality Value.
  • Pokémon listed under 'Special Ability' do not know it naturally, but can be taught that Ability. An asterisk means the Ability must be taught to a prior evolution and then retained when the Pokémon evolves.
